Final Project
Assignment Details
Length: VARIES
Due: December 9
Our final exam in ENGL 1101 is a culmination of the semester as a whole. It will test both your ability to
convey ideas in both a written and visual format by asking you to combine these skills into a single final
project. The final project is in two parts, and both parts must be completed in order to receive a
satisfactory grade.
One portion of the final project is the video essay. You will choose one of the three (3) major essays we
wrote over the course of the semester and revise it into video essay format. Said video essay should not
be simply a read aloud version of the paper, but rather an adaptation that reinterprets the original
essay’s thesis into this new form. You may add additional information not present (or even possible) in
the essay’s original form, take the idea of the essay from a different perspective, or even add on to the
original essay’s thesis. This means that though some differences are expected, you should make sure to
keep the core thesis of the original essay in your revision, even if you choose to revise the Nonfiction
Essay.
Using this new format, you will be able to add pictures, clips, music, (additional) sources, and any other
elements you would like to emphasize the points you made in the original publish. The video essay is a
useful tool for translating writing into a more accessible format and for building a transferrable skillset
for outside of the English classroom. Video Essays must be AT LEAST five (5) minutes in length and
should use AT LEAST three (3) visual elements. You can always add more to both of the above, and you
can utilize any tools you would like in order to edit the video. There are multiple samples on D2L to give
you examples on what the video essay could look like.
As you begin the process of creating a video essay, keep in mind that you must also have an Explanation
of the Process. You will write at least two (2) paragraphs that explain how and why you transformed the
essay you chose into a video essay. The first paragraph should explain why you chose that particular
essay, what you got from the assignment, and how you feel you did with it. The second paragraph (or
more) should document a bit of the process you went through to create the video essay. What
challenges (if any) did you run into turning this essay from a written to a visual format? Where you able
to do new things with the video essay that you were not able to do with the written one? How could a
video essay be more or less beneficial for the type of essay you revised? In general? Explain your video
essay process here to demonstrate your growth and versatility as a writer.
Remember to put the Explanation in proper MLA style, ensure your video essay can (and has) been
uploaded, and check over both for major missteps as you go. You also should ensure that the audio used
for the video is your own (so no computerized or AI voices), your file is saved as a .mp4 or .mov, and that
your Explanation of Process answers all of the questions asked. Both components of this final project
will be uploaded to D2L by the end of the day on Monday, December 9th, so be sure to upload them in
their proper place. Below is a grading rubric for the two components of your final project, so use that to
guide you to producing the best possible final. Good luck!
