First, download the Ocean Conservancy’s Clean Swell app onto your mobile device, and create an account. If you don’t have a mobile device or prefer not to use the app, you can create an itemized written tally and keep track of your collection manually (be sure to categorize the pieces of litter into categories such as plastic bags, food containers, wrappers, plastic bottles, masks, gloves, cigarette butts, etc).
Plan your 1-hour litter collection. The location is up to you! It can be a park, beach, river, neighborhood, campus, roadside, hiking trail, or anywhere else that you have observed trash. Please choose a location that has lots of trash to increase your sample size (and your impact!)!
Conduct a litter collection for a minimum of one hour. Collect all trash items you encounter (big and small), and keep track of the items you collect. If you are using a written tally, take a picture of your completed tally to show the types of trash collected.
If you are using Clean Swell, open the app and choose “Start Collecting” when you are ready to begin. For the Group, please write “Pierce College Oceanography.” As you pick up trash, click on the appropriate icon. When finished, take a screenshot of your tally (showing the types of trash collected), and click “Done Collecting” and your data will be shared with the Ocean Conservancy to help them track litter collection data.
When finished, take a picture of yourself* with your collected trash at your litter collection location. *Your image must show your face. Any posts without this image will receive a zero. Video Tutorial on Clean Swell AppDirections for Initial Post
