The objective of this assignment is to apply the concepts of creativity from the course materials to diagnose, propose solutions, and manage creativity within an organization.
Choose either A or B.
Choice A. Discuss how the four major conceptual blocks (from Whetten, Ch. 3) apply in today’s organizational settings. Specifically, discuss how these four major concepts can be applied to your personal experience in a present or past job or other life situation. (Note: There are eight specific examples, so try to apply at least one example for each of the four conceptual blocks). Why do these blocks occur in organizations in the first place? Using our readings (Amabile & Khaire, Grant, Whetton & Cameron) and your personal insights, what can managers do to promote creativity?
Choice B. The assigned readings on creativity/innovation and conceptual blockbusting provide many insights that have implications for today’s managers. How do these various concepts apply to you? The purpose of this question is for you to propose a plan of action you would like to use that creatively deals with or solves a problem or issue you encounter in your job (or life situation). Specifically, describe one or more areas of weakness or areas that are most important to you that you would like to improve on. This could be a job situation that requires you to get others to think and behave more creatively or it could be a personal situation in your job or daily life that you would like to change and for which a creative solution would be helpful. Perhaps there is an interpersonal issue that requires a creative solution. Be sure to show how you are applying the creativity concept and analyze why it is necessary. Then, describe a plan of action you would like to take that you think would solve the problem. How will you know you have been effective? What actual changes will indicate success? It is important to emphasize that this question involves a plan that you would initiate or take the lead in solving a problem.
Important Note: At first glance, Choice A may look easier for you to complete. However, responding to it might require that you work harder to be analytical. Choice B may provide natural and deeper analysis. Keep that in mind. It’s also important to consider all content to date, not just the most recent resources.
