PART 1
This is a simple Text entry. MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS!!
SCENARIO
You have taken a day trip on a small yacht with six strangers (seven total people). Although you do not know them, you have spent several hours talking with each other as you have been confined to the yacht for the better part of a day now visiting various marine sites. It is time to start heading back when your yacht springs a leak and begins to sink quickly. There is a small lifeboat that can only carry five people. The yacht is too far out to swim and only five people can accompany the lifeboat. Two people will die. You must choose who to take on the lifeboat. Not choosing is not an option.
ASSIGNMENT, PART I: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Create a character description for all seven people (including yourself – even if fictitious). Each character description should contain at least four facts about the character. (Example: Rosa is a fifty-five single mother of three who works as a bank teller. She is terrified of water and has taken this trip to try to overcome her fears so she can go on a cruise with her terminally ill mother later that year.)
PART 2
This is a WORD document (doc, docx) only. No other formats will be allowed. Please use complete sentences and paragraphs. Do not use bullet point-style writing.

ASSIGNMENT, PART 2: QUESTION
Using utilitarian principles, which five people should go on the lifeboat and which should be left to die? You must justify your answers for each person.
In this Assignment, you must directly cite and demonstrate your familiarity with the assigned readings by citing at least four quotes (two from Bentham and two from Mill) and integrate them into your explanations and discussions. Quotes and paraphrases must be relevant. You must cite (not counted as the four citations above) and include in your discussion either or both Bentham’s and Mill’s principle of utility/greatest happiness principle.
One of the points of this assignment is to show me that you understand Bentham’s and Mill’s basic ideas of what utilitarianism is and to apply that understanding directly to a hypothetical situation.
